Everywhere we go in Mexico has to have a claim to fame. I guess that’s what helps drive tourism, but some are just too much marketing.
Guanajuato has Las Mommias, Bernal has the Peña de Bernal, Tiquisquiapan is a Pueblo Magico (of which there are 177 in Mexico), and all of them are on some Cheese and Wine Route (of which the cheese is usually a disappointment).
In the early 1900’s, Tequisquiapan was named the geographical center of Mexico. Another claim to fame… except that later it was found not to be the center, but still reaffirmed its claim as the center even though it isn’t (see the main photo of the monument dedicating this).
There seem to be many wine and cheese routes in Mexico to drive tourism. We’ve seen the one here in Querétaro also called the “Art, Cheese, and Wine” route. To which we joke that it’s really the one and only “Art, Cheese, Wine, Honey, and strip mining” route in Mexico. Definitely a worthy draw for a weekend away.
Nonetheless, it all adds to the charm of this country. I guess it’s like passing the Historical Markers in the US and feeling the urge to stop just to see what least-known historical event it’s commemorating.
